Applying twice for the same degree, but under different status? Not a problem. Most Universities employ some sort of Student Management System that tracks and assigns unique identification numbers to applications. Using some of the unique identifiers applied to your application, a number is assigned and in most cases, becomes one's student ID number with slight alteration. It is imperative that duplicate ID numbers are not assigned to the same individual so that all of the supporting documents are matched to complete the application and move the application to review and decision.

Applying for a bachelor's degree initially as a first time in college student, and then as a transfer applicant will not adversely impact an application. It will provide context to one's narrative if admission was denied initially because of the predictive value of the academic profile (High School GPA and test scores) against demonstrated performance in a collegiate environment. Transfer applicants often face a harder path as there are fewer slots available for admission compared to the freshman class, but the improbable may move to possible with a solid academic performance and strong letters of recommendation.

There is no need to apply twice for the same type of admission during the same admission year(i.e. first time in college Early Action and Regular Decision). If an application is borderline applicable for regular decision, but not for Early Action, the institution will roll the application into the pool. A rejection letter comes only if the application is not worthy of a second look with newer transcripts or additional testing. While many top students are not accustomed to being denied, college admission is possibly the first time someone not related to you has told you no and meant it. Stop feeding the low acceptance rates of elite schools thinking that your application with “beat the odds" with an under performing academic profile and modest extracurricular activities. Application fees are real money and very soon every dollar will matter at the institution one does attend. Apply where a strong program(s) in the career you desire exists; that you are competitive for admission and can afford to matriculate through graduation. Save the elite programs for Grad/Professional school applications if they apply to one's career. I hope this helps.

Good luck!
